Batik is the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye. In Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and the word batik originates from the Javanese tik meaning to dot. To create batik, a design or pattern is hand drawn onto a piece of fabric. The drawing is then traced with hot wax which resists the dye and prevents the different colours running into each other. The design is then hand painted using permanent dyes. Once the dye has dried and set, the piece is boiled to remove the wax and fix the colour.
Each zodiac has been individually hand batiked on durable natural fabric (rayon for the table size zodiac and cotton for the floor size zodiac) and represents an individual piece of art. As each piece is unique, they will all vary slightly as they have not been machine printed.
